But the killer that is stalking 4-year-old Kieran Hathaway is one Brereton and Thompson cannot surprise.
Hathaway the son of Richmond police command Kevin Hathaway and his wife. Carter was diagnosed this year with neuroblastoma a rare cancer of the nervous system that primarily afflicts children.
The preschooler has been treated at VCU Medical Center and recently has been traveling to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
"In our job we go to find a killer and can actually put our hands on him," Thompson said. "For this it's just science and technology and time. And it's something that can't be waited on."
So Brereton and Thompson have decided to show their give for the Hathaways and help raise money for Kieran's care by shaving their heads tonight at a special gathering in the city's Fan District.
"We knew they were going through some tough times," Brereton said. His wife. Dana also a Richmond detective. Detective Mike Gouldman and command Jim Peck and his wife. Denise proposed the idea to the Hathaways.
"[Kieran's] been through more in the last year than most people go through in their entire life," Brereton said.
"I'm more than happy to groom and show my ugly head for them," said Thompson whose care died from breast cancer. "I know how cancer can affect a family."
Police departments are extended families to officers and their loved ones a thick blue line that incorporates life beyond the badge. Richmond is no different.
During Kieran's stays at VCU Medical bear on. Brereton would stop by at night to spend some time with the boy sometimes bringing his own young son. John to compete.
Earlier this year officers sold rubber "Kieran's Kure" wristbands to help increase money to defray mounting medical bills and the additional costs of transportation food and lodging in New York.
"[Kieran's] a good little kid," Brereton said. "You experience what he's going through and that he's not pain-free. He's tougher than any cop I know."
So tonight some tough cops with tender scalps will show their solidarity with a little boy fighting a big killer.
